Who can
stay at the Dorothy Day House?
We house up to ten adult men at a time. They must have a
good attitude and be working to make positive changes in their lives.

services.
How does one apply to stay there?
We operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no
waiting list to get a bed, so people can call or stop by to see if we
have any open beds.
How long can residents stay?
We do not have a set limit. The length of the stay is
determined by the resident. If he continues to try and continues
to work hard and have a good attitude, then he can stay as long as
needed. We ask the guests to keep a journal of their
activities and to keep us updated on their situation, then we as a
staff evaluate each resident's status on a weekly basis.
Do I
have to pay to stay there?
There is no fee to stay here.
Do I
need identification?
We prefer that residents be able to show identification, but if
that is not possible, then we can still work with them.
Is there
a waiting period before a resident can
return after he leaves?
The standard wait (DNR - Do Not Return) is 90 days, however, if
the resident leaves as the result of noncompliance with the rules or
with staff, we may require a longer period of time, this is determined
by the staff.
Is there
an appeal process?
Yes, anyone wishing to appeal the DNR, to come back before that
time is up, can write a letter to the staff explaining the
circumstances and why it should be reconsidered. The letter will
then be evaluated by the staff.
Do you allow drop-ins, for example, just to
come in and eat or drink?
We are not a drop-in center. We do provide services to
homeless and needy people who do not stay at the House, but these
guests can only be on the premises while using one of our specific
services, for example, to do laundry or take a shower.
